Filigrigold Golden Retrievers

Frequently Asked Questions

We have gathered answers to the questions families most often ask about our breeding philosophy, how we raise our puppies, and the journey of welcoming a Filigrigold Golden Retriever into their lives.

About Filigrigold

01.What makes Filigrigold different?

Filigrigold is different because we do not simply breed puppies — we deliberately develop future dogs. We breed infrequently, with careful genetic planning, structured early development, and a long-term view of health and temperament. Our focus is not on how many puppies we produce, but on who those dogs become over a lifetime.

02.Are you a registered breeder?

Yes. Filigrigold is a registered ANKC (Dogs Australia) breeder and complies with all relevant Dogs Queensland and Dogs Australia regulations, codes of ethics, and breeding standards. Our ANKC breeder registration number is 4100173155.

03.Where is Filigrigold located?

Filigrigold is located on acreage in the hinterland between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

04.How often do you breed?

We breed selectively and infrequently. Our program is guided by the health, maturity and readiness of each prospective mother, the suitability of planned pairings, and our commitment to raising each litter with the highest standards of care and early development. We do not operate on a fixed breeding schedule or volume-based model.

05.Do you have puppies available now?

Filigrigold is a small, family-based breeding program, with each litter thoughtfully planned rather than produced to meet immediate demand.

As we breed selectively and infrequently, puppies are not routinely available at short notice. We encourage prospective families to enquire well in advance and familiarise themselves with our application and placement process.

Occasionally, a puppy may become available due to changing circumstances, but all placements remain subject to our usual application, assessment and matching process.

06.Do you have a waiting list?

Yes. We maintain a waiting list for our planned litters and encourage prospective families to enquire well in advance. All applications are carefully reviewed, and acceptance onto our waiting list does not guarantee a puppy or placement within a particular litter. We ask approved families to maintain regular contact and reconfirm their continued interest every two months. This helps us keep our waiting list current and ensures that families remain actively engaged in the process.

07.Can I visit Filigrigold?

Filigrigold is our private family home and breeding property, and we are not open to the general public for casual visits or meet-and-greets. For the safety, privacy and wellbeing of our family, dogs and puppies, visits are strictly by invitation and reserved for prospective puppy families progressing through our application and approval process. Our designated Puppy Family Days provide approved families with an opportunity to meet us and spend time with our puppies, once they are old enough and appropriate biosecurity measures can be maintained. We appreciate your understanding and respect for the boundaries we maintain to protect our home and breeding program.

Our Breeding Philosophy & Puppy Raising

08.What is your breeding philosophy?

Our breeding philosophy centres on the responsible conservation and advancement of the Golden Retriever through thoughtful selection, conscientious breeding practices, and an unwavering commitment to health, temperament and structural soundness. Every breeding decision is made with the long-term welfare of our dogs and the integrity of the breed in mind.

09.What do you breed for?

We prioritise temperament, health, structural soundness, and breed-appropriate type. Our aim is to produce Golden Retrievers who are physically healthy, emotionally stable, and well suited to life as family companions, therapy prospects, or performance dogs, depending on individual aptitude.

10.How are your puppies raised?

Our puppies are raised in a thoughtfully structured and enriched home environment, guided by the Filigrigold Method — our approach to early neurological, sensory, emotional and environmental development. Through age-appropriate handling, carefully introduced experiences and purposeful enrichment, we aim to nurture confidence, resilience and adaptability, while respecting each puppy’s individual developmental needs.

You can learn more about our early development practices on our How We Raise page.

11.Are puppies raised in the home environment?

Yes. Our puppies are raised as part of our household and daily life, rather than in kennels or commercial facilities. This allows them to become familiar with normal household sounds, activities, and human interaction from an early age.

Health, Ethics & Responsibility

12.What health testing do you do on your breeding dogs?

All breeding dogs included in our program undergo comprehensive, breed-appropriate health screening. This includes hip and elbow assessments, specialist cardiac examinations, annual ACES eye examinations, and DNA testing for relevant hereditary conditions within the Golden Retriever breed.

Health testing is an essential part of our breeding decisions, alongside temperament, structural soundness and pedigree evaluation. Only dogs meeting our breeding criteria are considered for inclusion in our program.

13.Do you provide a health guarantee?

Yes. Every Filigrigold puppy is placed with a written health guarantee as part of our Puppy Purchase Agreement, outlining the health provisions, responsibilities and obligations of both the breeder and the new owner.

While comprehensive health testing and careful breeding decisions help us minimise known hereditary risks, no breeder can guarantee that a dog will remain free from illness or inherited conditions throughout its lifetime.

Our health guarantee reflects our commitment to responsible breeding, transparency and ongoing accountability.

14.Why are puppies not desexed before they leave?

At Filigrigold, we believe desexing decisions should take into account the individual dog’s growth, development and long-term wellbeing, particularly in a large breed such as the Golden Retriever.

Reproductive hormones play an important role in normal development, and research suggests that the timing of desexing may influence certain health outcomes. For this reason, we do not routinely desex our puppies before they leave for their new homes.

Our Puppy Purchase Agreement requires females to experience their first season before desexing, with surgery generally recommended from 12 months of age and at an appropriate interval following their season. Males are required to be desexed between 18 and 24 months.

We encourage families to discuss their dog’s individual circumstances with their veterinarian, while observing their Filigrigold agreement. Further information is available in our Desexing & Maturity Guide.

15.Do you offer lifetime breeder support?

Yes. We provide ongoing support to all Filigrigold families for the lifetime of their dog. This includes guidance on health, training, development, and general care, and we welcome contact at any stage of the dog’s life.

Puppy Application & Placement

16.How do I apply for a puppy?

Prospective families are invited to complete our Puppy Enquiry Form through our website. This allows us to learn more about your lifestyle, experience, expectations and the home you hope to provide.

Each application is carefully considered, and suitable applicants may be invited to progress through our assessment process, which includes further discussion and opportunities to meet us.

Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance onto our waiting list or the allocation of a puppy.

17.How are puppies allocated to families?

Puppies are thoughtfully matched to their families by the breeder, based on individual temperament, development, activity level and suitability for each family’s lifestyle and circumstances.

Throughout their early development, we observe each puppy’s emerging personality and behavioural characteristics to help inform our placement decisions.

Our priority is finding the most suitable match for both puppy and family, rather than allocating puppies on a first-come or preference-only basis.

18.Can families choose their puppy?

Families are welcome to share preferences, however final puppy placement is determined by the breeder. This approach ensures that each puppy is placed in the most appropriate home, based on temperament, activity level, and individual characteristics observed as the puppies mature.

19.Can I request a particular colour or appearance?

We understand that families may have preferences regarding the appearance of their future Golden Retriever. However, our breeding decisions are guided by health, temperament, structural soundness and overall breed quality, rather than producing puppies to meet particular colour preferences.

Coat shades can vary within a litter, and we do not guarantee a specific colour or appearance.

Above all, our priority is matching each puppy with a family whose lifestyle and circumstances complement that puppy’s individual temperament and needs.

20.Can I meet the parents of my puppy?

Where possible, approved puppy families have the opportunity to meet their puppy’s mother and other resident Filigrigold dogs during our designated Puppy Family Days.

The sire may not always be available to meet in person, as we occasionally use carefully selected stud dogs from other breeders, both within Australia and overseas.

We are always happy to share information about the parents, including their pedigrees, health testing and the considerations behind each planned pairing.

All visits are by invitation and subject to our established health, safety and biosecurity protocols.

21.What happens if I am not offered a puppy from my preferred litter?

Occasionally, litter size, individual puppy temperaments or other circumstances may mean that we are unable to offer a suitable puppy to every approved family.

In these situations, families who wish to continue with Filigrigold are generally given priority consideration for our next planned litter, rather than having to begin the application process again.

All placements remain subject to the availability of a suitable puppy and our commitment to thoughtful, individual puppy matching.

22.At what age do puppies go to their new homes?

Our puppies typically join their new families at around nine weeks of age, following their initial vaccinations, veterinary health checks and early developmental program.

However, each litter is assessed individually, and departure dates may vary depending on the puppies’ health, development and overall readiness. The wellbeing of our puppies will always take precedence over a predetermined departure date.

23.What is included when I take my puppy home?

Every Filigrigold puppy leaves for their new home having received their age-appropriate veterinary health checks, initial vaccinations and microchipping, together with their individual health records and a thoughtfully prepared puppy pack.

Our puppy packs include comprehensive written care and development guidance, feeding information, familiar comforts and carefully selected items to help families support their puppy’s transition into their new home.

All puppies are registered with Dogs Australia (ANKC) through Dogs Queensland on the Limited Register. Registration certificates are issued by Dogs Queensland and forwarded to families once received. Please be aware that processing times are determined by Dogs Queensland and may extend beyond your puppy’s departure date.

We also provide access to complimentary introductory pet insurance, subject to the insurer’s current terms, together with our ongoing breeder support throughout your dog’s lifetime.

Pricing, Contracts & Practicalities

24.What is the price of a Filigrigold puppy?

Our puppy pricing reflects the considerable investment in health testing, thoughtful breeding decisions, early development, veterinary care and lifelong breeder support.

Current pricing is provided to prospective families during the enquiry and application process, ensuring they receive accurate information relevant to our planned litters.

25.Do you require a deposit?

Yes. Once a litter has been born and we are progressing with approved families, a deposit is requested in conjunction with the issuing of our Pre-Purchase Agreement, generally when the puppies are between two and three weeks of age.

Deposits form part of our puppy placement process but do not entitle families to select a particular puppy. All puppies are thoughtfully matched to their families by Filigrigold, with individual suitability remaining our priority.

Deposits are refundable if a family withdraws before an individual puppy has been allocated, or if Filigrigold determines that a placement will not proceed, in accordance with the terms of our Pre-Purchase Agreement.

26.What does your contract cover?

Every Filigrigold puppy is placed under a comprehensive written Puppy Purchase Agreement, outlining the responsibilities and obligations of both the breeder and the new owner.

This includes provisions relating to health, ongoing care, registration status, desexing requirements and our lifetime return or rehoming policy.

27.Do you place puppies on the Main or Limited Register?

All Filigrigold puppies are placed on the ANKC Limited Register and sold on a not-for-export basis. Main Register placement is considered only in exceptional circumstances and solely for approved ANKC-registered show homes.

28.Do you place puppies interstate or overseas?

Interstate placements may be considered on a case-by-case basis for suitable, approved homes. Filigrigold does not offer overseas placements, and all puppies are sold on a not-for-export basis.

After Your Puppy Comes Home

29.What support do you offer after placement?

Our commitment to every Filigrigold puppy continues long after they leave our care.

We remain available to guide our families through the various stages of their dog’s life, offering advice and support on settling in, feeding, development, training, health concerns and general wellbeing.

Whether you’re navigating the early puppy months or seeking guidance later in your dog’s life, we welcome you to reach out whenever you need our support.

30.Do you stay in contact with your puppy families?

Absolutely. We value the relationships we build with our puppy families and love hearing how our Filigrigold dogs are growing, developing and enjoying life in their homes.

We warmly welcome photographs, updates and milestones throughout their lives. Staying connected not only brings us great joy, but also helps us understand the long-term health, temperament and development of the dogs we have bred.

For us, the relationship doesn’t end when a puppy goes home.

31.What happens if a family can no longer keep their dog?

If circumstances change and a family is no longer able to keep their Filigrigold dog, we require that the dog be returned to us or that we assist in an appropriate rehoming process. This ensures that every Filigrigold dog remains safe and supported throughout their life.
